Excellence in Education Award Finalists

When discussing higher education, there is often a focus on the more serious, systemic problems facing institutions–rising costs, poor outcomes, a stultified academic culture, dwindling public resources–all important topics that need to be addressed–and less attention on the often minute, personal exchanges that make higher education so essential and so powerful: the life-changing impact on thousands of learners fostered by talented and dedicated faculty members. We all remember someone like this: a teacher or professor who made a lasting impression on us. Perhaps these transformative experiences are rarer than they should be, but even so: just one can change you forever.

The VCCS Office of Professional Development’s Excellence in Education Awards is one small way that community college faculty who are engaged such transformative teaching can receive recognition for their important work. Yesterday, the Office of Professional Development and New Horizons Awards Committee announced the finalists for 2016, who will compete for awards in one of three categories:

  1. BEST PRACTICES IN TEACHING FACE-TO-FACE, ONLINE, AND HYBRID
  2. IMPROVING STUDENT SUCCESS – INSTITUTIONAL
  3. INNOVATIVE USE OF TECHNOLOGY IN THE FACE-TO-FACE  AND ONLINE CLASSROOM
