Six Community Colleges Receive “Achieving the Dream” Grant Funding for OER

Continuing on the path to lower the cost of education for community college students in Virginia, 6 colleges have been awarded an Achieving the Dream grant to complete zero textbook cost degrees or certificates. Central Virginia, Germanna, Lord Fairfax, Mountain Empire, Northern Virginian and Tidewater Community Colleges are the institutions selected to participate. Working with 26 community colleges from across the United States, Virginia will be targeting transferable degrees and certificates unique to the region.

Mountain Empire Community College will be focusing on their certificate program in “Old Time Music”. Currently one of the only programs in the country focused on the continuance and preservation of Appalachian music and culture, creating open education resources for courses in this field will allow a new generation of learners to understand this unique and rich musical tradition.
