NRCC & VHCC Mobile Apps Released

Last August, the System Office held a contest challenging college representatives to submit a plan for rolling out a *free* version of Blackboard Mobile Central, Blackboard’s mobile app development service that is part of our Bb Mobile Learn contract. The winner got a no-cost Bb Mobile Central implementation. Eight VCCS colleges submitted plans. New River Community College’s well thought-out proposal was selected and the project team cheerfully agreed to serve as mobile app development guinea pigs.

After almost a year of working closely with the Blackboard Mobile team on this project, NRCC has finally unleashed their mobile app for iOS devices. It can be found in the iTunes store, where you download it to your iPhone for free.

The NRCC app is actually a suite of apps. It includes a course directory app, a student directory app, a news app, an events app, and an app that links to NRCC’s mobile website. There are also apps for emergency information, college photos, and campus maps, as well as the Bb Mobile Learn app. These apps are based on templates created by Blackboard.

Tim Jones, the Director of Information Technology at New River, lead a small project team that included NRCC’s Jonathon Surratt and Rick Maitri as well as staff at Blackboard Mobile to complete the first of what will be a multi-phase project. The next phase entails using Blackboard Mobile’s Software Development Kit (SDK) and Adobe PhoneGap to create more flexible,  customized apps for NRCC. So stay tuned for the release of additional NRCC mobile apps in the future.

In other mobile app news, Charles Boling, Coordinator of Library & Instructional Support Services at Virginia Highlands Community College emailed me to announce that the VHCC Mobile app went live on July 24th, 2012 and is available in both the iTunes store for Apple devices and Google Play Store for Android devices.
