What-If Grades

Creator: Page Durham, Senior Instructional Designer in Instructional Support Services

What-If Grades allow students to calculate a potential total grade by entering hypothetical grades for assignments. Only students can enter and view What-If scores.
Have your students ever wondered what grade they would need on their final in order to get a B for the course?
Have your students wondered how their grade would be affected if they missed a homework assignment?

If so – tell your students about the What If feature in Canvas. By entering a hypothetical grade they can calculate their potential final grade. Please note that only the student sees the hypothetical final grade. No changes are made in the faculty gradebook for that student.

(Claims that there is a security hole in Canvas allowing students to change their grade in Canvas have not be substantiated. Please note, that my team and my Instructure support team remain current with these claims and test them out. Some students believe they have changed their grade when using the What If function in Canvas…they are not. What If is a hypothetical scenario and does not impact the faculty member’s gradebook.)

Registration (Free & Required): http://bit.ly/3mOiEyR

Description
The webinar will provide a template to help faculty organize lesson design for live-online (or remote) instruction. We will discuss various instructional technologies (e.g., Google Docs, Sheets, Slides; Nearpod; Flip – formerly Flipgrid; Packback). The focus will be on a pedagogical framework intended to organically bring life to the instructional content. Participants will experience many of the technologies and practices through modeled demonstrations of student-centric teaching aimed to increase student engagement. We will explore the acronym ALIVE: attend, listen, inquire, vibe, and engineer.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:

    • understand the pedagogical framework presented;
    • feel prepared to adapt the framework to their own content;
    • be able to link appropriate technologies, pedagogies, and expected student outcomes for a synchronous class session.
