The Rich Content Editor (RCE) in Canvas appears just about everywhere you need to input text, from the course Home Page or instructional pages to Assignment or Quiz Instructions. One relatively new feature is the Icon Creator.

What does it do? The RCE Icon Creator allows you to quickly design an icon for use on your page. It can be monochrome or multi-colored, and monochrome can be any color. The icon can be any of several shapes from common squares or circles to triangles or stars.

Why Would I want to do this? You can use icons on your page to replace many forms of text. This can be to simply beautify your page by adding some color or variation, but it can also help simplify the page to reduce the sheer amount of text students need to read. Once defined, an icon can carry a lot of information in a single picture. These can be used to “clean up” your text so it is simpler and easier to read and understand.

Are Icons just pictures? An icon in the RCE can be a simple picture if you choose to use it as such, but it can also serve as a button for a link. These links can be to specific locations in your course such as the Syllabus area, or Modules, but can also be to external links such as a Google Form you want students to fill out or even specific pages on your college website. They can be external links to ANY site on the internet.
